The client is a 24/7 health club and gym operating in Melbourne, offering no-contract, pay-as-you-go access via a smart key app, along with amenities like sauna and ice baths. When we started working with them, the website had close to zero organic footprint no rankings, no listings authority, and no presence in the AI search tools that are increasingly shaping how people discover local businesses.
The Challenge
Starting from scratch meant there was no existing traffic, no backlink profile, and no local search presence to build on. On top of that, gyms in Melbourne are a competitive category multiple established chains and boutique studios were already dominating local search and Google Maps.
The goal wasn’t just “more traffic.” It was:
- Get found by people actively looking for a gym near them
- Build enough trust and authority to rank locally
- Get the brand surfaced inside AI tools like ChatGPT, not just Google
- Turn visits into memberships, not just page views
Our Strategy
1. Fixed the Website Structure First
Before any content or outreach, we cleaned up the site’s technical and page structure proper internal linking, clear service pages, and a setup that search engines and AI crawlers could actually parse and understand.
2. Heavy Focus on Local Listings
We prioritized local listings across every relevant directory and platform, making sure NAP (name, address, phone) consistency and category tagging were correct this is a major factor in how AI tools pull local recommendations.
3. Google Reviews Strategy
We built a simple, repeatable strategy for the client to collect Google reviews consistently from real members, rather than one-off review pushes. This became one of the strongest trust signals feeding both Google Maps and AI search results.
4. Conversion-Focused Page Content
Every individual page was rewritten with a direct call-to-action sign up, join, get access instead of soft CTAs like “learn more.” The goal on every page was to move a visitor toward becoming a member, not just to inform them.
5. Off-Site Authority Building
We built authority by getting the site referenced and linked from other relevant websites, targeting coverage across small and large areas across Australia not just hyper-local content, but a broader footprint that AI tools could pull from as supporting evidence.
6. Paid Marketing Support
We invested in paid marketing to accelerate visibility and awareness alongside the organic push, rather than relying on organic alone.
7. Reddit & Natural Conversation Marketing
This was one of the most important pieces. We didn’t run ads on Reddit or drop links. We spoke directly with happy members and asked them to genuinely share their real experience with the gym if someone asked about it in a relevant thread. The resulting mentions were organic, unscripted, and written in the members’ own words not a marketing script.

Why It Worked
The results didn’t come from one single tactic they came from stacking fundamentals correctly:
- Structure first so the site was actually crawlable and understandable
- Local listings + reviews to build the trust signals AI tools and Google Maps rely on most
- Conversion-focused content so traffic didn’t just visit, it acted
- Genuine community mentions (Reddit) instead of manufactured marketing
- Off-site authority to support rankings beyond just on-site work
- Paid support to accelerate what organic was already building
The biggest takeaway: SEO in 2026 isn’t just about optimizing a website. It’s marketing reviews, community trust, real conversations, and consistent local presence combined with the technical fundamentals.
